Part wellness retreat, part wine resort: This boutique property by Argentina’s first female winemaker is all about balance.
Nestled among Mendoza’s picturesque vineyards, Susana Balbo Winemaker’s House & Spa Suites feels less like a hotel and more like a stylish friend’s private estate. From its immaculate landscaping—where lush greenery and sleek volcanic slabs frame private garden terraces for each guest suite—to its chic, spacious common areas, every corner has been thoughtfully designed to balance peaceful moments of solitude with casual opportunities to mingle.
Susana Balbo, a world-renowned winemaker and the first woman to hold the title in Argentina, and her daughter, Ana Lovaglio Balbo, lovingly crafted this boutique retreat with a winemaking ethos of balance, depth, and a deep appreciation for the land.
“My idea was to create a big, peaceful place in the middle of nature,” says Susana Balbo. “Somewhere that combines the beauty of the environment with the tranquility needed to truly relax. Here, we don’t sell a room to stay in; we offer an experience. Something special that’s more than just handing you a key.”
The seven sleek, modern suites—each inspired by one of the chakras—serve as private spa sanctuaries, complete with state-of-the-art sensory steam showers and soaker tubs inspired by the egg-shaped concrete tanks used for wine fermentation at Balbo’s winery. Four suites boast private dry saunas, and all offer an impressive menu of in-suite treatments. Message the concierge to arrange a massage, hydrating red-wine body wrap or grape-seed scrub.
At the heart of the property is La Vida, a Michelin-recommended restaurant led by Chef Flavia Amad. The seven-course menu transforms local ingredients into plated works of art, featuring bold combinations like duck and kimchi, alongside modern takes on classic dishes such as a delicate, elevated version of humita (traditional corn pudding). Guests can also book ahead for hands-on baking or cooking classes, learning to make empanadas or grill meats on the property’s traditional Asado.
While you may be tempted not to leave the grounds, there’s every reason to explore. Guests staying two nights or more can book an included day trip and tasting at the Susana Balbo Winery, where options include a multi-course meal at Osadía de Crear or a picnic lunch among the vines, framed by the Andes mountains. For the ultimate wine experience, the Wine Immersion program offers a fully customizable tour of the region’s top wineries, granting access to exclusive properties closed to the general public.
- Number of suites: 7
- What we loved: An in-room aromatherapy bath infused with fragrant lavender and rosemary.
- Culture fix: The hotel’s intimate art collection features works curated by Susana and Ana Balbo, including photography by Sebastião Salgado, modern pieces by Julio Le Parc, framed illustrations by Martín Villalonga, and a striking “Tree of Life” installation by Sergio Roggerone that tells the story of Balbo’s winemaking journey and family legacy.
- Bonus: Leave it to an oenologist to understand the power of aroma: Susana Balbo’s subtly luxurious signature room fragrance greets you upon check-in—and it’s available for purchase, perfect for transporting yourself back to Mendoza once you’re home.
